Business Studies

Overview
The Business Studies GCSE is divided into six parts.
Part 1 - Business in the real world: This part of the course introduces our students to the subject. It
considers the purpose of business ac=vity, the role of business enterprise and entrepreneurship, and
the dynamic nature of business. While studying this unit students will encounter the different legal
forms a business can take, the goals they set themselves, how they decide where to locate and how
they plan their ac=vi=es. Both this part of the course, and part 2 relate to the four func=onal areas of
business (business opera=ons, human resources, marke=ng and finance) that are covered in parts 3
to 6.
Part 2 - Influences on business: All businesses are influenced by external factors and this unit
considers some of the most important of these, including technology, the economic climate,
globalisa=on and the law.
Part 3 - Business Opera=ons: Discover the different ways that businesses produce goods and
services, how they manage their stock and suppliers, and how they aPempt to produce high quality
products and provide excellent customer service.
Part 4 - Human Resources: Topics within this part of the course include how businesses structure
their organisa=ons, how they recruit and select new employees and how they mo=vate and train
those employees once they start work.
Part 5 - Marke=ng: This chapter encompasses the ways in which businesses iden=fy, understand and
target their customers with adver=sing and other methods of promo=ng their products. This will
help our students understand how businesses discover the needs of their customers using market
research.
Part 6 - Finance: The final part of the course helps the students understand how businesses raise the
finance they need to establish and expand their businesses. It also shows how businesses manage
their cash, calculate their profits (or losses) and use financial data to judge their performance.
